The Remutaka Hill — New Zealand’s Most Challenging Mountain Road
The Remutaka Hill Road on State Highway 2 connects Upper Hutt to the Wairarapa over a 555-metre summit. It is one of New Zealand's most challenging and historically significant mountain passes — a narrow, winding road with steep gradients, tight hairpin corners, and exposure to severe winds that can reach gale force at the summit. Breaking down on the Remutaka Hill is a uniquely dangerous situation that demands specific knowledge and rapid, specialist recovery.
Why the Remutaka Is So Dangerous for Breakdowns
Several factors combine to make the Remutaka Hill particularly hazardous for breakdowns:
- Steep gradient: The hill climbs from near sea level to 555m over approximately 12km. A vehicle with any brake or engine issue on this gradient faces immediate risk of loss of control.
- Tight corners: Limited visibility around corners means stopped vehicles are not seen until a following driver is extremely close.
- High wind: The Remutaka summit is exposed to severe Wellington winds. Doors blown open by wind have caused accidents; opening a vehicle door on the wrong side is extremely dangerous.
- Limited shoulder: Many sections of the Remutaka Hill have minimal shoulder space, leaving little room for a stopped vehicle.
- High traffic mix: Tourists, commuters, and heavy trucks all use SH2 over the Remutaka.
If You Break Down on the Remutaka Hill
Immediate Actions
- Turn hazard lights on immediately — before the vehicle stops completely
- Get to the left as far as possible — even a small amount of additional clearance helps
- Do not open doors on the traffic side — especially at the summit where wind can catch doors violently
- If you must exit: Exit from the uphill/left side only, and move immediately behind a barrier or as far from the carriageway as possible
- Do not attempt to push or roll the vehicle — on the Remutaka's gradient this is extremely dangerous

Vehicles Most Vulnerable on the Remutaka
- Overheating engines: The sustained climb puts exceptional load on cooling systems, particularly in summer
- Brake failure: Descending drivers who ride their brakes can experience brake fade or failure — a critical emergency
- Old vehicles: Any vehicle with marginal mechanical condition is at risk on the Remutaka's demands
- Overloaded vehicles: Caravans, trailers, and overloaded utes struggle with the gradient
