After an Accident in Wellington — Step by Step
Wellington's road network — steep hills, narrow streets, the Ngauranga Gorge, the Remutaka Hill, and two major tunnels — creates accident scenarios that are often more complex than those in flatter NZ cities. This guide covers exactly what to do in the critical minutes and hours after a Wellington accident.
Step 1: Check for Injuries
Before anything else — check yourself and all occupants for injuries. Call 111 if anyone is injured. Wellington City Hospital's Emergency Department on Riddiford Street in Newtown is the region's primary trauma centre. Hutt Valley Hospital in Kelson serves the Hutt Valley.
Step 2: Make the Scene Safe
Wellington's specific considerations:
- On steep hills: Ensure all handbrakes are fully applied and wheels turned to the kerb before exiting vehicles. Multiple-vehicle accidents on Wellington gradients have secondary incidents when vehicles roll.
- In wind: Be aware of doors — open them on the sheltered side and hold firmly. A wind-blown door can cause injury and additional damage.
- In tunnels: If you cannot move the vehicle out, stay inside with hazards on and call 111 immediately.
- On the Remutaka Hill: Both parties should move to the uphill side of the road behind barriers. Never stand on the road downhill of your vehicles on the Remutaka.
Step 3: Legal Requirements
NZ law requires you to: stop immediately; give your name, address, and vehicle registration to the other party; call Police (111) if there are injuries or if a driver leaves the scene; and remain at the scene until Police arrive if there are injuries or if Police are coming. On Wellington motorways and the Remutaka Hill, always call 111 regardless of injury status.
Step 4: Document the Scene
Photograph: all vehicle damage, the road surface and any skid marks, the position of vehicles, nearby road markings, and the other vehicle's registration plate. On Wellington's hilly roads, also photograph the gradient context — this is relevant for insurance assessments.
